Memorial Day Weekend in Kansas City: Family-Friendly Events, Festivals, and Things to Do

{2025 Edition} Memorial Day Weekend welcomes summer in a flurry of seasonal events—and in Kansas City, it's one of the most vibrant times to explore, celebrate, and slow down with your family. Whether you're looking to reflect and honor those who've served, dive into your first waterpark visit of the season, or enjoy a weekend of music, food, and fun, this guide will help you make the most of the long weekend.

Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 26, 2025, and with kids out of school and warm weather settling in, it's the perfect opportunity to spend intentional time together. From parades and ceremonies to lakeside picnics and fireworks, here's everything you need to plan a meaningful and memorable weekend for your family.

Memorial Day Parades and Ceremonies in Kansas City

If you're looking for a way to connect with the heart of the holiday and help your kids understand its meaning, these Memorial Day ceremonies offer a beautiful place to start.

National WWI Museum and Memorial – Memorial Day Ceremony

The National WWI Museum hosts a powerful Memorial Day event on the lawn overlooking the city each year. Expect a flyover, patriotic music, speeches from veterans and community leaders, and a wreath-laying ceremony that's both somber and inspiring. This event is free and open to the public, and it's one of the most moving ways to begin the holiday weekend. Bring a blanket and arrive early for good seating.

Liberty Memorial Flag Display

In addition to the ceremony, the Memorial also features a breathtaking installation: Flags of Valor, a field of more than 1,000 American flags in honor of the fallen. It's a quiet, powerful way to reflect and spark meaningful conversations with your children.

Blue Springs, MO – Memorial Day Parade

This hometown parade offers the charm of small-town Kansas City with a patriotic lineup. Bring folding chairs and a small cooler—it's a sweet tradition for families in KC.

Memorial Day at the Truman Library

This solemn event honors those who died while serving in the US military. Free admission to active-duty military personnel, including the National Guard and Reserves, and their families. The museum opens at 9:00, with a salute scheduled for 11:00.

Kansas City Memorial Day Festivals and Family Fun All Weekend Long

If a celebration is what you're after, these festivals bring the energy and offer something for everyone:

Celebration at the Station

This signature Kansas City event is back and better than ever in 2025! Held outside Union Station, the evening features a free concert from the Kansas City Symphony, followed by a spectacular fireworks display. It's truly a bucket-list event for local families. Arrive early with lawn chairs or picnic blankets and enjoy pre-show activities, food vendors, and a festive atmosphere.

Crown Center - Thomas and Friends Explore the Rails

All aboard for engaging learning adventures with Thomas The Tank Engine as you help him be a "Really Useful Engine." This free exhibit is an imaginative adventure for the whole family!

County Fairs and Small-Town Festivals

Look to surrounding towns like Parkville, Kearney, and Blue Springs for old-fashioned carnivals with rides, funnel cakes, and fireworks. These smaller celebrations are often less crowded and super family-friendly.

Outdoor Adventures to Kick Off Summer

Want to spend the weekend soaking up the sunshine? These outdoor attractions are perfect for unplugging and making summer memories:

Worlds of Fun

Opening weekend at Worlds of Fun is a family tradition for many KC locals. With thrill rides, live entertainment, and the newly updated Camp Snoopy for younger kids, there's something for everyone. Memorial Day weekend can get busy, so consider a Fast Lane pass if you're going all in—or early in the day to beat the crowds.

Oceans of Fun

Oceans of Fun is a great way to launch summer with a splash if the weather cooperates. With areas for toddlers, wave pools, and big slides for older kids, sunscreen and soggy towels are worth it.

Smithville Lake

Less than an hour north of KC, Smithville Lake offers boating, paddleboarding, trails, and designated swim beaches. Pack a picnic, rent a kayak, and stay for the sunset.

Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead

This sweet family destination in Overland Park includes animals, wagon rides, pony rides, a fishing pond, and a charming general store. It's one of my go-to's when I want a relaxing day full of magic for the kids.

Ernie Miller Nature Center or Burr Oak Woods

For a quieter day outside, check out one of these conservation areas with shaded trails, hands-on exhibits, and sometimes live animal programs. They're free and ideal for strollers or younger kids who want to wander.

Weston, MO

Stroll the charming downtown, grab fresh fruit or a picnic lunch at Weston Orchard, and hike the bluff trails at Weston Bend State Park. It's a slow-paced, scenic escape just 45 minutes from the city.

Powell Gardens

Just east of KC, Powell Gardens is bursting with blooms in May. Their beautiful landscapes, butterfly gardens, and outdoor art exhibits are ideal for peaceful family time—and the perfect backdrop for a spring family photo.

Lawrence, KS

With parks, shopping, and a vibrant local food scene, Lawrence is an artsy, active spot for families. Walk Mass Street, visit the local farmers market, or rent a paddleboat at Clinton Lake.

St. Joseph, MO

Dive into history with a visit to the Pony Express Museum, or let the kids explore at the interactive Remington Nature Center. St. Joe is full of hidden gems and well worth the short drive.

Quiet Ways to Honor Memorial Day at Home

If you're staying home this year, there are still meaningful ways to honor the day and enjoy time together:

  • Catch a viewing of the National Memorial Day Concert on PBS together as a family.

  • Create a red, white, and blue craft—try handprint flags, paper poppies, or wreaths.

  • Write letters or draw pictures for veterans or active-duty military through organizations like Operation Gratitude.

  • Visit a local cemetery or memorial and leave flowers.

  • Have a backyard BBQ and talk about what Memorial Day means. You might be surprised by what your kids have to say.

Tips for a Smooth Family Weekend

  • Plan: Parking, crowds, and weather can shift fast. Make your list and pack accordingly.

  • Bring snacks and water, Even if you think it'll be a short outing.

  • Protect from the sun: Hats, sunscreen, and extra water bottles go a long way.

  • Talk about the meaning of Memorial Day: Even young children can understand themes of service, sacrifice, and gratitude.

Memorial Day weekend is a beautiful blend of remembrance and celebration. Whether you're honoring those who served at a ceremony, kicking off summer at a waterpark, or wandering through flower gardens with your littles, there's no shortage of meaningful ways to enjoy the weekend as a family.
