Today, I’m sharing the answers to all your questions, as well as tips from your resident sunflower pro about how to make sure you have the best experience and make the most of your sunflower photos.
When to Book Sunflower Photos in Kansas City
Sunflowers bloom at different times across the US, but in Missouri and Kansas, and specifically in Kansas City, they usually bloom between mid August and early September. From the time sunflower seeds are planted, it takes between 80 and 120 days for sunflowers to reach full maturity and bloom, depending on the variety. This timeframe is completely dependent on a number of factors, including rain, sunshine, and wind.
Missouri and Kansas provide excellent climates for sunflowers, with plenty of dry conditions and sun in the summer months. Kansas City’s unique big city convenience is coupled with an extremely driver-friendly layout, which affords sunflower seekers a variety of plausible options when it comes to bright, cheery sunflower fields.
Where to Take Sunflower Photos in Kansas City
While the Kansas City metropolitan area is a bustling city, rural surroundings in Missouri and Kansas offer an assortment of sunflower fields for those seeking sunny photos. Kansas City photographers who offer Sunflower Photo Sessions will be your best resource for the best locations for sunflower fields in Kansas City. If you just want to take a drive to view the beauty, your best bet will be to do a quick search on Facebook. Because these sunflower fields are cultivated by area farmers, most do not have websites with information, and rely solely or primarily on social media to spread the word.
What to Wear for Sunflower Photos in Kansas City
As far as your color palette is concerned, sunflower photos are the perfect opportunity to showcase your vibrant side by accenting your attire with pops of color in shades of red or blue. Warm, light-colored neutrals work well; denim is also a solid choice. Steer clear of yellows, oranges or greens, as they’ll cause you to blend in to the vibrant backdrop.
Busy patterns are usually a no go, unless they are small and dainty. When in doubt, ask your professional photographer to weigh in! We are always glad to help, and would much rather give our two cents than have you show up in attire that is unflattering for your sunflower portraits.

What to Expect for Sunflower Photo Sessions
Sunflowers grow in fields, so it should come as no surprise that sunflower photo sessions take place in - you guessed it, fields. If farm life is something you’re not particularly familiar with, take note: fields can be messy. There’s a real likelihood that you will get dirty, dusty or even muddy. At the minimum, you can expect your shoes to get very dirty.
Additionally, sunflowers are very dearly loved by bees, so don’t be surprised when there are many bees staying busy in your local sunflower field. If you don’t bother them, they are unlikely to bother you. They are busy pollinating and doing important bee work, so please be kind and leave them to it. If you are allergic to bees, be prepared; you will be entering “their” territory.
How to Prepare for Sunflower Photo Sessions
The best way to prepare for sunflower photo sessions is to keep in mind your surroundings, purpose and possible needs, and bring any supplies you may need. At the minimum, I recommend:
Be sure all members of your party use the restroom before you go to the sunflower field. There are no public restrooms available.
Bring a couple of old towels to wipe off dirty or muddy shoes, or a change of shoes. You will get dirty, and if you want to protect your vehicle from mud/dirt stains on the carpet, you’ll want to clean up or change before leaving.
Bring baby wipes or sanitizing wipes. You will get dirty, and you’ll want to clean up!
Bring sunscreen, and a sun hat! If you aren’t actively having your photos taken, you’ll appreciate the shade!
Bring snacks, and plenty of water. Sunflower season happens during some of the hottest days of summer. You’ll want water, and a snack on hand for any little ones (or big ones) who are prone to the “hangries.”
Bring a good attitude! Sunflowers are such happy, bright reminders of summer. They put a smile on even the grouchiest face!
Bring allergy medication and a first aid kit. Sunflower fields are way out in rural Missouri and Kansas, in most cases, so it’s important to bring any medications and a first aid kit with you. If anyone in your party is allergic to bees, be sure to bring appropriate medication needed in the event of a bee sting.
